Description

This course will survey the history of American Popular Music from its roots in Minstrelsy and Vaudeville, through Tin Pan Alley, Blues and Country, and Rock and Roll to the performance practice of today's post-rock popular music. Topics of discussion will include the interplay in the 1960s between art music and rock music, as well as the cross influences of various genres on each other.
